Dy Coates has been a resident of Livingston Parish since 1977. He began his career with the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office in March of 1993 as a Correctional Officer. He moved to dispatch a short 2 months later. Dy Coates stayed in dispatch until 1997 where he then moved to Jail Supervisor. After 3 years of being a supervisor Dy Coates was promoted to Cheif of Security in 2000 where he made sure all inmates were secure as well as the Jail Facility and personal are properly trained and kept up to date. In, 2005 Dy Coates was promoted to Assistant Warden, where he remains at this time.

Dy Coates is a graduate of East Jefferson High in Metarie. He attended Loyola University for Parliamentary Procedure and also University of New Orleans for Business Classes. He is retired from Asbestos Workers Local 53.

Dy Coates has attended numerous classes held by the Louisiana Sheriff's Association. His Certificates include, R-e-a-c-t Arm Bandit, P.O.S.T Correctional Officer School, D.N.A. Testing, Advanced Taser Instructor School, Anti-Terrorist Training, Freeze +P, ASP Tactical Baton, Stinger Systems Instructor, Pepper Ball Instructor, and is also a negotiator certified through the Louisiana Association of Crisis Negotiators.
