Sheriff Jason Ard says, ‘According to his Louisiana criminal history, Thomas has been arrested over 10 times in Livingston Parish. Thomas has 6 felony convictions related to narcotics and guns.'

Sheriff Ard explains, ‘Thomas fired one shot after my team announced their presence in the residence.
The 12 counts of ‘Attempted 1st Degree Murder of a Peace Officer' come from the fact that Thomas fired toward my 12-member team who were there to carry out a mission to protect and serve. My LPSO
SRT members undergo intense specialized training. The fact that they did not return fire shows
emotional, physical and mental control in this high-stress situation. Kids were in the residence. This could have been a very bad situation. As for the ‘Child Desertion Charges', those were added because 4 of the children within the residence were under the age of 10 and were put in extreme danger because of the suspects' actions.‘

Sheriff says, ‘My LPSO SRT member – again – was not injured, but checked out by medical personnel as a precaution. This 8 1/2 year veteran of the LPSO team was hit in the front of his vest. I am happy
to report that he is in excellent condition and was able to return home safely to his family.'

This investigation continues. More charges are pending.

BACKGROUND:

LPSO SRT Narcotics Operation

Just after 6:00p.m. on March 10, 2015, members of the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office Special  Response Team (or SRT) executed a narcotics-related search warrant.  Sheriff Jason Ard says, ‘Members of my Special Response Team are called in for high risk operations. This search warrant was secured after a detailed undercover investigation handled by members of my Narcotics Division.' The warrant was secured for a property located at the intersection of Johnson Lane and Sycamore Street in Walker, LA.

Upon entry into the residence, SRT members located several individuals – including juveniles. While
SRT members were conducting their search, one individual fired at LPSO SRT members through a wall in the residence. One round hit a SRT member in his bullet-proof vest. That LPSO SRT member was not injured. No one else in the residence was injured as a result of the gunfire. Sheriff Ard says, ‘The only shots fired were from that individual. My SRT team did not return fire. The person who fired the gun quickly tossed the firearm and hid – surrounded by juveniles.' Ard says, ‘You never know what
you'll come across in this type of situation.  My team followed protocol and used their training wisely. I'm thankful for our protective gear and the job it does to protect law enforcement officers on the job.'

Robert O. Thomas (D.O.B. 2/8/1985) of the residence located at the corner of Johnson Lane & Sycamore St. in Walker is charged with:

>Several Counts of Attempted First Degree Murder on a Peace Officer

>Several Firearms Violations

>Several Illegal Narcotics Violations

*Thomas is currently on parole for drug charges

**Thomas is in the process of being booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center.  Please monitor http://www.lpso.org/ and our ‘Inmate List' tab located at the top of our home page for more.

Sheriff Ard says, ‘We did recover illegal narcotics as a result of the search warrant. At this hour, this investigation continues. More charges are pending. More arrests are possible. We have dealt with Thomas in the past. He has been arrested by the LPSO before on drug charges.'
